Movie Trailer Tuesdays - 4/28/15

Area 51
Directed by Oren Peli
Three young conspiracy theorists attempt to uncover the mysteries of Area 51, the government's secret location rumored to have hosted encounters with alien beings. What they find at this hidden facility exposes unimaginable secrets.

Ugh…. UGH….. UGGGGGGHHHHHH…. This trailer is filled with cheap gimmicks and bad acting. I like the concept, but the execution seems to be half-assed. Modern horror/thriller movies have gone down the toilet with the found footage format. "Area 51" hits theaters May 15th.

The Visit
Directed by M. Night Shyamalan
Starring Kathryn Hahn, Olivia DeJonge, Ed Oxenbould and Peter McRobbie
A single mother finds that things in her family's life go very wrong after her two young children visit their grandparents.

Confession time: I've got a soft spot for M. Night Shyamalan.  I have at least enjoyed all of his movies. Doesn't necessarily mean I loved them, but I did enjoy watching them. Though it is undisputed that this will not be as good or even close to "Unbreakable" or "The Sixth Sense", I am looking forward to this. "The Visit" hits theaters September 11th.

Mr. Holmes
Directed by Bill Condon
Starring Ian McKellen, Milo Parker, Laura Linney and Hattie Morahan
An aged, retired Sherlock Holmes looks back on his life, and grapples with an unsolved case involving a beautiful woman.

I was about to post the original trailer I had seen and tear it apart. It wasn't a very good trailer. But I found this one which is a huge improvement from the last. This one actually gets me excited for the movie, and having the song "Nero" by Two Steps from Hell is a plus! Seriously, check it out. It's beautiful. Now I'm actually looking forward to seeing this. And that, my friends, is the power of editing! "Mr. Homes" hits theaters July 17th.

Pitch Perfect 2
Directed by Elizabeth Banks
Starring Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, Brittany Snow and Hailee Steinfeld
After a humiliating command performance at Lincoln Center, the Barden Bellas enter an international competition that no American group has never won in order to regain their status and right to perform.

This trailer made me laugh. A bit too much, actually. Having seen the first one, although I'm not crazy about it, it's actually making me look forward to this one. And worse comes to worst, I get to watch Anna Kendrick for two hours. And that's enough for me. "Pitch Perfect 2" hits theaters May 15th.

Black Mass
Directed by Scott Cooper
Starring Johnny Depp, Dakota Johnson, Benedict Cumberbatch and Joel Edgerton
The true story of Whitey Bulger, the brother of a state senator and the most infamous violent criminal in the history of South Boston, who became an FBI informant to take down a Mafia family invading his turf.

Damn, Johnny Depp! You scary! This just jumped up to my most anticipated fall release. My buddy had the chance to work on this film and that's just an added bonus to go see it! GO see Johnny Depp completely lose his mind on September 18th.

Movie Trailer Tuesday - 4/7/15

Burying the Ex
Directed by Joe Dante
Starring Anton Yelchin, Ashley Greene, Alexandra Daddario and Oliver Cooper
A man regrets agreeing to have his overbearing girlfriend move in with him and she begins to change things without consulting him. Much to his surprise, slight dismay, yet overall satisfaction, she is killed when she is hit by a bus. During his grieving, he meets another woman who he quickly falls for, but is soon reminded of his past when his dead ex-girlfriend comes back from the dead as a zombie.

This seems like a major rip-off of "Life After Beth". It is the same exact concept with slight changes, so it can't even be called original. I'm not sure how to feel about this one. I like the cast and director. But to me, it looks like a much less inspired version of the Aubrey Plaza movie. We'll see. "Burying the Ex" has yet to receive a U.S. release date.

The Gift
Directed by Joel Edgerton
Starring Jason Bateman, Rebecca Hall and Joel Edgerton
A husband and wife try to reinvigorate their relationship but their lives are threatened by a "friend" from the husband's past who holds a horrifying secret about him, sending their world into a tailspin.

What appears to be Joel Edgerton's passion project, this movie seems all too familiar. It seems like your standard guy-stalks-family kind of movie. I love Jason Bateman, but I'm not sure if he could pull off a straight drama. But he may surprise me. We'll find out when "The Gift" opens on July 31st.

The D Train
Directed by Andrew Mogel and Jarrad Paul
Starring Jack Black, James Marsden, Kathryn Hahn and Jeffrey Tambor
The head of a high school reunion committee travels to Los Angeles to track down the most popular guy from his graduating class and convince him to go to the reunion.

In my mind, the only thing that interests me in seeing this movie is Jack Black. It's been a while since I've seen him in anything and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a fan of his. But other than that, this trailer didn't make me laugh at all. This could go either way. "The D Train" (Which I can't tell if they're meaning for it to be an innuendo or not) opens May 8th.

Masterminds
Directed by Jared Hess
Starring Zach Galifianakis, Kristen Wiig, Jason Sudeikis and Owen Wilson
A night guard at an armored car company in the Southern U.S. organizes one of the biggest bank heists in American history.

If Jared Hess is the master of anything, it is awkward characters with bad hair. This movie seems to be no exception. It has potential to be funny with the plot and the cast, but it could also be a disaster. I'm going to try to remain positive and say I think it will be good. I hope I'm not wrong. "Masterminds" hits theaters August 7th.

Straight Outta Compton
Directed by F. Gary Gray
Starring O'Shea Jackson Jr., Corey Hawkins, Jason Mitchell and Aldis Hodge
The group NWA emerges from the streets of Compton, California in the mid-1980s and revolutionizes pop culture with their music and tales about life in the hood.

I'm not going to sit here and pretend that I know anything about NWA. The extent of my knowledge of them is Ice Cube's filmography and that they hate cops. The songs of theirs that I've heard I've enjoyed, but it's not exactly my scene. But I love F. Gary Gray's work and I will see anything he does. "Straight Outta Compton" comes out August 14th.

Tune in next Tuesday for more trailers! If you have any suggestions for movies or even trailers to cover in next weeks installment, comment or message me on Facebook at:

Get the Gringo (2012)

Directed by Adrian Grünberg
Written by Mel Gibson, Stacy Perskie and Adrian Grünberg
Starring Mel Gibson, Kevin Hernandez, Daniel Giménez Cacho and Dolores Heredia

An American with a lengthy criminal record gets picked up by Mexican authorities after crashing his car just across the U.S./Mexico border. Finding two-million dollars in the car, the corrupt Mexican officers throw him into a tough prison and keep the money for themselves. He must now learn to survive in this prison that is unlike any he has been in before.

A balanced mix of a modern take on old western movies and a prison break heist, this movie is entertaining. While I would find it hard to believe if I found out that the film makers didn't take any creative liberties in their depiction of Mexican prisons, it is certainly an interesting comparison to the prison movies Americans are used to.

Think what you will about Mel Gibson in his personal life, but it would be ignorant to say that he doesn't know how to make a good movie. His writing proves itself to be unique and slightly over the top and his performance shows that even at 56 (the age he was when this was made), he can still hold his own in an action movie.

He's really good at having everyone around him get shot and
coming out unscathed.

This is no "Lethal Weapon" (which I haven't seen, but there must be a reason people still talk about it). It doesn't match up to "Braveheart" or "The Patriot". But it is a fun movie that is worth the watch. And there are so many taco stands throughout, it will make you want taquitos.

My Rating: 6/10
